Christophe Cox, CEO
Christophe leads APOPO's team, with many years of management experience in East Africa. Christophe has a Master of Science in Product Development & Development Sciences, and developed most of APOPO's technical realizations.
Bart Weetjens, Founder
Bart is a product development engineer. He initiated the idea to train rats as an appropriate technology to detect landmines and to screen for tuberculosis. Bart founded APOPO with support from Professor Mic Billet and his colleagues at Antwerp University, and has since been elected both an ASHOKA fellow and a SCHWAB fellow. He is a practicing Zen Buddhist monk.
Sabrina Antognazza, CFO
Sabrina is a human resources and organization specialist and has studied development economics & finance. She has several years of experience in rural Africa and joined APOPO in 2009.
Dr. Negussie Beyene, Analytical Chemist
Negussie has a PhD in analytical chemistry and was an Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He has conducted research in Austria, South Africa and Spain. Negussie is seconded by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) to manage APOPO's analytical explosives chemistry lab at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in support of the REST research program.
Dr. Alan Poling, Behavioural Researcher
Alan has a Ph.D, in psychology and is a professor at Western Michigan University. He is an experienced researcher with more than 250 publications, with articles in 40 different journals. He has particular expertise in within-subject research designs and behaviour analysis and joins APOPO in the interest of furthering its scientific activities.
Hannah Ford, Communications Manager
Hannah joined the APOPO team in early 2010 as a communications volunteer for the HeroRAT program, and she has since taken up the role of Communications Manager. Hannah has a background in professional writing, editing, and educational communications. Prior to joining APOPO, she worked as a Project Manager for a communications and public relations consultancy in Australia. Hannah's focus is on raising awareness of APOPO's work through a variety of creative communication campaigns, cultivating donor relationships, and increasing public support for the HeroRATs cause.
Switzerland
Håvard Bach, Head Mine Action and Human Security
Håvard Bach joined apopo in June 2010 APOPO as the Head Mine Action and Human Security. He has been working closely with APOPO for 11 years as Head of Operational Methods at the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). During his time there, he has supported a range of different governments and organisations in Asia and Africa and he has been responsible for a variety of operational mine action activities and research projects, including animal detection, use of machines, manual mine clearance and mine action technology. One of Håvard's recent core responsibilities with GICHD has been the development of 'land release' concepts and he is working to develop these concepts into field applications with APOPO.
Mozambique
Andrew Sully MSc, Program Manager
Andrew is a behavioural zoologist who comes to APOPO from Dstl, the scientific research body of the UK Ministry of Defence. Andrew was working in the Olfactory and Bio-systems team of the Explosives Detection Group, studying the use of animals for explosive detection. He is a qualified Mine Action Advisor for the British Army, and trained as an EOD engineer with the British Army Reserve Forces.
