APOPO UK Foundation

In 2019 APOPO launched the APOPO UK Foundation. The Foundation aims to support APOPO's overall global activities by strengthening our collaboration with UK partners, increasing engagement with the UK public while expanding our network and financial resources.

Zoe Muller - Chairwoman

Trained as a Biologist and with a PhD from University of Bristol, Zoe spent many years in Africa managing wildlife research and conservation projects. She now manages the global research projects for The Donkey Sanctuary, one of the UK's largest equine welfare charities.

Zoe has a background and passion for animal training, so she is delighted to bring to APOPO significant experience of both the UK and international animal-focused charitable sectors, along with extensive experience of grant writing, monitoring and evaluation, and developing strong evidence bases to support operational decisions.

Susan Robertson – Trustee

Susan Robertson is co-founder of OnePoint5Media and Innovators Magazine, which are working to reshape publishing and communications - to support the progress of the UN Global Goals.

Susan is active in the sustainable and social innovation landscape across Europe, developing partnerships and collaborations across countries, including speaking at the European Innovation Summit at the European Parliament. She is an experienced communication consultant, journalist and successful entrepreneur and looks forward to sharing her expertise with APOPO.

Gemma Hampson - Trustee

Gemma is MD of Hactar, a digital agency for social good, where she heads up a team of designers and developers to create digital products to make the world a better place. She spent the previous seven years working in charity digital and communications and a further decade before that as a journalist in social enterprise and local press (as well as music!). It was covering the Skoll World Forum where she first heard about APOPO, where the mix of innovation and human impact made her a life-long supporter.

She hopes to bring expertise and insight about “digital" design and principles to APOPO - being user-led, content, user experience of the charity (not just digital), fundraising, marketing and comms, innovation, governance, transparency, security, people and money.

Susana Frazao Pinheiro – Trustee

Susana trained as a microbiologist in Portugal and obtained a Doctorate in HIV Immunology and an MBA from the University of Oxford. She did research in the Medical Research Council in The Gambia and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the USA and later in a Phase-I clinical trial for an HIV vaccine conducted at Oxford.

She learned about APOPO as a Skoll scholar and later met Bart while organizing the First Forum on Social Entrepreneurship in Lisbon. She designed and leads the Healthcare and Life Sciences Initiative at University College London´s School of Management and hopes to bring her experience in research and health policy to contribute to APOPO's mission.

I understand how working animals can transform people's lives, and I'm hugely excited to extend this knowledge from working equids to African giant pouched rats. I have a background in, and passion for, animal behaviour and training, so I'm delighted to support an organisation which trains animals to improve people's lives.
